Why Seasonal Flowers Are Always the Right Choice
Choosing flowers that are in season is one of the simplest ways to get a more beautiful, longer-lasting bouquet. Seasonal blooms are fresher when they reach you, often more fragrant, and they carry the character of the time of year. At Edith Wilmot, we build our arrangements around what is at its best each month — here is what to look forward to through the year.
January & February
The year opens quietly. Snowdrops and hellebores suit the soft winter light, while hyacinths bring an unmistakable fragrance indoors. Early tulips begin to appear, and February brings the year's peak demand for roses in classic reds, blush and white.
- Snowdrops, hellebores, anemones
- Hyacinths and the first forced tulips
- Roses (their busiest time of year)
March & April
Spring arrives in earnest. Daffodils and narcissi fill the markets, soon joined by ranunculus in cream, blush and coral. By April, tulips are at their most varied — parrot, double and fringed varieties all appear — and fragrant stocks add cottage-garden charm. This is also the season for Mother's Day flowers.
- Daffodils, narcissi, grape hyacinth
- Ranunculus, anemones, stocks
- Parrot, double and fringed tulips
May & June
The most celebrated months in floristry. Peonies arrive in May, and their brief season of just a few weeks makes them all the more special. Garden roses begin to bloom, sweet peas bring their irresistible scent, and lisianthus, foxgloves and alliums round out an abundant palette. It is also when our British-grown wedding flowers come into their own.
- Peonies (May–June only), sweet peas
- Garden and spray roses, lisianthus
- Foxgloves, alliums, campanula
July & August
High summer brings sunflowers, which lend warmth and joy to any arrangement, alongside cosmos, scabious and cornflowers for a looser, wildflower feel. This is the season for relaxed, generous, countryside-inspired bouquets.
- Sunflowers, gladioli, gerbera
- Cosmos, scabious, cornflowers
- Sweet williams, zinnias
September & October
Autumn's richer palette takes over. Dahlias are the stars, from neat pompoms to dinner-plate varieties in burgundy, rust and amber. Chrysanthemums are enjoying a well-deserved revival, while hypericum berries, rosehips and ornamental grasses add texture. Warm, spice-toned designs feel perfectly at home now.
- Dahlias (peak season), chrysanthemums
- Hypericum berries, rosehips, grasses
- Amaranthus, celosia, autumn foliage
November & December
The festive season calls for amaryllis, narcissi and richly scented foliage. Eucalyptus and winter greenery bring fragrance and texture to wreaths and centrepieces, while white lilies, berried stems and deep red roses make classic Christmas arrangements.
- Amaryllis, narcissi, paperwhites
- Eucalyptus, winter foliage, berried stems
- White lilies and red roses
